چکیده

Abstract Dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at ?kiloparsec scales are the progenitor population of SMBH mergers and play an important role in understanding pairing dynamical evolution massive galaxy mergers. Because stringent resolution requirement apparent rareness these small-separation pairs, there scarce observational constraints on this population, with few confirmed dual SMBHs <10 kpc separations z > 1. Here we present results from a pilot search for kiloparsec-scale quasars selected Gaia Data release 2 (DR2) astrometry followed up Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 dual-band (F475W F814W) snapshot imaging. Our targets primarily varstrometry technique, i.e., light centroid jitter caused by asynchronous variability both members unresolved quasar pair, supplemented subarcsecond pairs already resolved DR2. We find overall high fraction HST-resolved among varstrometry-selected (unresolved DR2), ?30%–50%, increasing toward redshift (?60%–80% 1.5). discuss nature 45 based HST supplementary data. A substantial (?40%) likely physical or gravitationally lensed quasars. also discover triple candidate quadruply quasar, which is smallest-separation quadruple lenses. These provide guidelines to improve selection follow-up confirmation ~kiloparsec-scale redshift.

COSMOS : Hubble Space Telescope Observations

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8⊓⊔) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W expos...

Agn Reddening and Ultraviolet Extinction Curves from Hubble Space Telescope Spectra

We present intrinsic extinction curves for 14 AGNs. The AGNs have reddenings, E(B-V), of up to 0.36 mag. The majority (13 out of 14) of the extinction curves are not steep in the UV. Of the seven best determined extinction curves, five have extinction curves that are as flat as the standard Galactic curve in the optical and near UV, but flatter in the far UV, and without the λ2175 feature. One ...

Intelligent Scheduling of Hubble Space Telescope Observations

This paper describes the S PIKE system, a general framework for scheduling which has been developed by the Space Telescope Science Institute for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Efficient use of astronomical observatories is very important to the scientific community: the demand for research-grade telescopes far exceeds the supply. The need for efficient scheduling is especially keen for sp...

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of 11 Carinae

We present new high spatial resolution observations of the material around 11 Carinae obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera. The star 11 Carinae is one of the most massive and luminous stars in our Galaxy, and has been episodically expelling significant quantities of gas over the last few centuries. The morphology of the bright central nebulosity (the homunculus) ...

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Schwartz

Schwartz 82 (IM Lupi; HBC 605; IRAS 15528-3747) is an M0 T Tauri star located within the Lupus star forming clouds at a distance of ∼190 pc (Wichmann et al. 1998). It is one of four young stellar objects in a small CO(1-0) core near the extreme T Tauri star RU Lupi (Tachihara et al. 1996). Unlike its more famous neighbor, Sz 82 displays only a modest amount of emission-line activity, with an Hα...
